Recognized as one of Canada’s most aggressive and underfunded cancers, pancreatic cancer requires focused scientific inquiry—and that is precisely what we deliver.

At Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society, our research efforts are anchored in a singular, resolute mission: to improve survival rates and the quality of life for Canadians affected by pancreatic cancer.

A National Strategy for a National Problem 🇨🇦

Pancreatic cancer is currently the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in Canada—and is projected to become the second within the next decade. Historically, it has received a disproportionately small share of funding. Craig’s Cause is determined to correct this imbalance by investing strategically in pancreatic cancer-specific research that is collaborative, cross‑provincial, and interdisciplinary.

We are proud to partner with leading institutions across the country, including the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute, Canadian Cancer Society, New Brunswick Health Research Foundation, and QEII Foundation. Together, we champion projects that improve patient outcomes and translate findings into practice.

Spotlight on Precision Immunotherapy in Nova Scotia

One of our standout projects is led by Dr. Jeanette Boudreau of Dalhousie University, a Scientific Director at BHCRI and member of our Scientific Advisory Board Patient Partners in Research. Her team is advancing natural killer (NK) cell-based immunotherapy by studying how the immune system can be trained to recognize and eliminate tumor cells in pancreatic cancer.

Key projects supported by Craig’s Cause include:

• Development of Natural Killer Cell–Based Precision Immunotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer

This project aims to decode the interaction between a patient’s tumor and their NK cell response, with the goal of “teaching” immune cells to effectively target and destroy pancreatic tumors. Craig's Cause Research

• Repurposing Anti‑Folate Receptor Antibodies for NK‑Driven Precision Pancreatic Cancer Immunotherapy

This study investigates the folate receptor alpha (FRα), commonly overexpressed on pancreatic tumor cells but not on healthy cells, exploring its potential as a precise immunotherapy target. Craig's Cause Research

• Mitochondrial Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs) Preparation

Researchers are isolating immune-activating markers released from dying cells to better understand and harness immune surveillance mechanisms. Craig's Cause Research

These innovative efforts exemplify Craig’s Cause’s commitment to precision immunotherapy research grounded in rigorous scientific methods.

A Diverse and Strategic Research Portfolio

Our funding initiatives are broad and impactful, including projects such as:

Direct inhibition of mRNA translation to block proteins essential for pancreatic cancer cell survival.

Combined oncolytic virus and NKT cell activation employing Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) platforms.

Advanced extracellular microvesicle capture techniques to isolate and identify novel pancreatic cancer biomarkers in blood.

Investigation into the metastatic role of p11 protein, to determine its viability as a drug target preventing cancer spread.

Each initiative is carefully selected for its scientific potential, ability to improve patient outcomes, and alignment with our overarching mission.

From Lab to Lives: Advocacy and Implementation

Craig’s Cause understands that meaningful impact requires more than laboratory breakthroughs—it demands systemic change. We engage in research advocacy, championing federal and provincial recognition and funding for pancreatic cancer research. Moreover, we facilitate clinical integration through initiatives like the Clinical Trial Finder, ensuring patients have access to cutting-edge studies. Craig's Cause Patient Support
