Board Executive: Treasurer

Overview:

Approximately 6900 Canadians are projected to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023. The projected estimated deaths are 5900 from pancreatic cancer in 2023. Pancreatic cancer has the highest fatalities of all cancers, making it the third leading cause of all cancers, and it is projected to become the second leading cause of all cancer deaths by 2030.

Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society is a national not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to changing the outcomes for Canadians diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We are increasing survival and improving the quality of life for every Canadian diagnosed with pancreatic cancer through awareness raising, education, support and research.

We are currently seeking interested candidates for our Volunteer Treasurer position on the Board of Directors.

General responsibilities:

  • To oversee all financial matters of Enterprise Asset Management (EAM)
  • To provide guidance to the Executive Director and to provide recommendations to the Board in the area of financial management and development
  • To serve as a member of the Executive
  • To participate in strategic planning activities, developing the vision and action plan for the future of the organization.
  • To provide appropriate governance and oversight to the organization.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Support Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society's bookkeeper and Executive Director in completing the Financial Statements.
  • Prepare the Treasurer's Report to the Board for Board Meetings (6 a year).
  • Prepare and present the annual Financial Report at the Annual General meeting.
  • Support the Executive Director in the creation of the annual budget and make related recommendations to the Board on opportunities for growth and development.
  • Serve as the primary contact with the Canada Revenue Agency, external auditors, banking organization(s) and payroll provider.
  • Coordinate the year-end financial review and/or audit process with external auditors.
  • Ensure implementation and adherence of necessary financial policies and procedures in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency not-for-profit, charitable and payroll policies and directives, and Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO).
  • Support funding proposals and financial reporting to governments and external funding organizations.
  • Respond to financial inquiries from the Board and funding organizations as required.
  • As a member of the Executive Committee, the Treasurer will participate and support in the hiring (if necessary) and ongoing performance management of the organization’s Executive Director, including the year-end performance evaluation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous work experience in Financial Management, including budgeting, financial statement review and analysis, forecasting, financial policy creation, etc.
  • Certificate or Degree in business management (or similar) and/or Chartered Professional Accountant designation preferred.
  • Experience using financial software systems (i.e. Quickbooks).
  • Previous experience with a not-for-profit Board of Directors and/or general community involvement is considered an asset.

Specific Meetings and Time Commitments:

  • Regular Board of Director meetings every two months (1 hr).
  • Annual General Meeting, held once a year (1hr.)
  • Committee meetings (1-2 hrs, frequency can vary).

Terms of Office:

  • Each Director serves a 3-year term with the option of serving a second 3-year term.
  • Directors shall serve three-year terms. At the end of their first term, directors may apply to be appointed for a second three-year term.
